This is my first post to the training log. The last couple of weeks have been a whirl wind of good days and bad. A couple of weeks ago I was at Earl Bell's jumping with Jeremy Scott and Kellie Suttle. It was pretty exciting to be jumping with two of the best vaulters in the country.
We started the outdoor season at Pitt State, Kansas. It was a chilly day with swirling winds; just what you would expect in the Midwest during early spring. Jeremy had a good day and got some great winds. He made a really spectacular jump at 16 feet with plenty of height. The video is on the video/pics page. I ended up with the ole NH (no-height) after a couple bad winds on the first two attempts and a blow through on the last attempt.
This last weekend we ended up in Tulsa to check out their new track. It was a great facility. The weather wasn't great once again, but we decided to give it a go anyway. A bad day of vaulting is still better than a good day of work, right. We both had decent warm up jumps and when the meet started the wind changed to our face. We started low and only made the first bar. That's pole vaulting.
After a disappointing day at Tulsa, we came back to the PVU training facility on Sunday and jumped. It turned out to be a good training day. We both got on bigger poles than we did at the meet the day before, which is pretty tough. We have been really working on starting on bigger poles and finding out what standard placements work with poles and heights and all that. Consistency is a valuable thing in the vault.
